R5 Funding support program

Step-up support program to higher funding

1.Purpose

The purpose of this program is to support researchers who have applied for and been unsuccessful in obtaining funding from top research grant categories, but who meet certain requirements and are producing outstanding results. This support aims to mitigate the risk of interruption or stagnation in research funding and to encourage researchers to continue challenging themselves by applying to top research grant categories. Additionally, this program aims to contribute to the increase of external funding obtained by the university.

2.The eligible recipients of this support must satisfy all of the following criteria: ①, ②, and ③.

①The eligible recipients must be the principal investigators of the research projects listed under the “Ongoing research categories with the final year being FY 2022, or for which the Notification of the Completion of Subsidized Project will be submitted in FY 2022” column, who have applied as principal investigators to the research categories listed under the “Supported research categories” column in the FY 2023 Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research (Kakenhi) public offering. However, “Specially Promoted Research” category is not eligible.

②The eligible recipients must have applied as principal investigators to the FY 2023 Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research and their application results must fall under any of the categories listed in the following table:

③To continue their research challenge, applicants are required to apply as principal investigators from the university to the same research categories as the FY 2023 Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research for the FY 2024.

Step-up support program through application in the previous year of the final year

1.Purpose

The purpose of providing research funding to the principal investigator who was not selected for a Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (S) or (A) in the “Application for the year prior to the final year of the research plan” is to promote continued applications for Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (S) or (A) and contribute to increasing the amount of external funding obtained by the university.

2.The eligible recipient must fulfill all of the following criteria: ①, ②, and ③.

①The eligible applicant must be the principal investigator of the research project listed in the “Ongoing research projects” column of the following table and must have applied for the “Support eligible research areas” listed in the “Application for the year prior to the final year of the research plan” for the fiscal year 2023 as the principal investigator for the research project listed in the aforementioned table.

Re-challenge support program

1.Purpose

The purpose of this program is to contribute to an increase in the number of research grants awarded by our university by providing support to principal investigators who meet the designated requirements and were not selected for scientific research grants, but still require funding to continue their research, with the aim of promoting early acceptance of their scientific research grant applications.

2.The following criteria must be met in their entirety by those eligible for support.

① The applicant must be a professor, associate professor, lecturer, or assistant professor (including specially appointed faculty members) affiliated with our university.
② The applicant must have served as the principal investigator for either a Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research (S) or Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research (A) project within the past three years (from the R2 (2020) fiscal year to the R4 (2022) fiscal year).
③ The applicant must have applied as the principal investigator from our university for either Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research (S) or Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research (A) (hereinafter referred to as the “supported research project”) in the R5 (2023) fiscal year public call and was not selected.
④ The applicant must have received an “A” evaluation for the supported research project in the R5 (2023) fiscal year public call, and for the Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research (S), the applicant must have been subject to hearing evaluation but not selected.
⑤ The applicant must not have any research project to be implemented as a research representative for KAKENHI in the fiscal year 2023 (R5), although they are eligible to apply for this support program even if they have a research project waiting for evaluation as a research representative.
⑥ Not having received support from the “Research Type Step-up Support Program” in the 2023 fiscal year.
⑦ Having research achievements such as presentations at academic conferences, publications in journals, and books from FY 2021 to FY 2023.
⑧ The applicant must apply as a research representative from this university for the research categories listed in the table below for the public offering in the 2024 fiscal year.

URA accompanying support program

1.Purpose

The aim is to contribute to the continued increase in the number of applications and acceptances of large-scale research projects from our university by providing support for advisor matching by URA, enhancement of research content, and correction of application documents, including research plan proposals, as well as preparation for hearings, generally with the aim of achieving acceptance within approximately three years, for those planning to apply as representative for a large-scale research project in KAKENHI.

2.The eligible recipient

Individuals who are planning to apply as a principal investigator or a research area representative for a large-scale research project of KAKENHI (a research project whose application amount during the research period is generally over 100 million yen) and who have been granted eligibility to apply for KAKENHI at our university. This includes the comprehensive team of the academic transformation area research (B) and the basic research (A) that applies for the intermediate classification 1-10 (large classification A) in the KAKENHI screening classification.

2.Support contents

(1)Introducing and matching with research advisors for the applicant of the KAKENHI grant.
URA will match advisors from those who have extensive experience as field representatives in academic change fields, reviewers of large-scale research projects for scientific research grants, and other related experience. Once a matching is made, URA will coordinate scheduling as necessary and support the applicant in receiving feedback and support on their research plan from the assigned advisor.
(2)Support for mock hearing
If the applied research project becomes subject to hearing, the applicant can receive support for a mock hearing.
(3)Consultation and support to URA for enhancing research plan, among other things.
